Why parents reach out

Sometimes there is a clear reason: a panic attack at school, a breakup that hit harder than expected, grades falling off a cliff, a comment about not wanting to be here. More often it is slower. Your kid stopped coming out of their room. They are irritable in a way that feels different from normal teenage moodiness. They have stopped seeing friends, or they are glued to their phone in a way that looks like hiding.

Teens themselves tell us they feel pressure from every direction, that they cannot turn their brain off at night, that they do not know how to tell their parents what is wrong, or that they are working out something about their identity and need somewhere safe to think out loud.

You do not need to know what the problem is to bring them in. Figuring that out is part of the work.

How we work with teens

The first job is getting your teenager to actually talk, which means a therapist who does not lecture, does not report back every detail, and does not treat them like a problem to be fixed. Our therapists who work with teens are chosen for exactly that. Sessions are collaborative, and teens have a real say in what they work on.

Depending on what is going on, that might mean cognitive behavioral skills for anxiety or depression, work on self-esteem and perfectionism, support around friendships and relationships, or space to explore gender and sexuality without anyone pushing an agenda. Some of our therapists use art and play-based approaches with younger teens. We are also neurodivergent-informed, which matters for teens with ADHD or autism who have spent years being told to try harder.

Parents are part of this. You will know what the goals are, how things are going, and anything that touches your child's safety. What your teen says in session otherwise stays in session, and we will explain that boundary to both of you in the first meeting so nobody feels blindsided. When family dynamics are part of the picture, we can bring parents into sessions or refer to one of our family therapists.

What to expect

Intake usually includes time with the parent and time with the teen, so the therapist hears both sides. Teens are often guarded in the first session, and most settle in within two or three. Weekly sessions are typical to start. Telehealth works well for many teens, especially those who open up more easily from their own room. We accept most major insurance and can verify your benefits before the first visit.

Cost and insurance

We are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, United/Optum, Aetna, Humana, and TriWest VA Community Care Network. Self-pay sessions are $150 for 45 minutes, and the first intake visit is $175. We can verify your benefits before you come in.

Common questions about teens therapy

What age do you start seeing teens?

Most of our teen therapists see clients 13 and older. A couple of our therapists also work with younger children. Contact us with your child's age and what is going on, and we will tell you who is the right fit.

Will I know what my teen talks about in therapy?

You will know the goals, the general direction, and anything related to safety. The details stay between your teen and their therapist. That privacy is what lets a teenager be honest in the room, and it is the reason therapy works for them. Your therapist will explain this clearly in the first session.

My teen does not want to go. What do I do?

That is common, and it is not a reason to wait. Tell them it is a trial, not a sentence. Three sessions is a fair test. Our therapists are used to reluctant teenagers and are good at earning trust without forcing it. Many teens who resist at first end up asking to keep going.

Do you work with LGBTQ+ teens?

Yes, and we are affirming, which means your teen's identity is treated as something to support, not something to question or change. Our therapists are experienced with gender and sexuality exploration, coming out, and the stress that comes from family or school environments that are not accepting. See our affirmative care page for more.

Can therapy for my teen be done online?

Yes. We offer telehealth throughout Arizona, and many teens prefer it. For younger teens, or when safety is a concern, your therapist may recommend in-person sessions at our Mesa office.
