What Sets This Experience Apart

Structural Parts Work

We don't just process memories—we work with the different "parts" of your personality that may be holding onto protective roles or roadblocks. Using phase-oriented treatment and Structural Dissociation Theory, we address the internal system that develops in response to prolonged or complex trauma.

The River Metaphor

We use the flow of the water as a living tool for EMDR interweaves, helping you visualize and feel the movement of "stuck" energy leaving your system. The rhythm of the river becomes part of the processing itself.

Ritual & Release

This experience includes a dedicated Rock Release Ritual. Drawing from indigenous wisdom, you will identify a physical stone to represent the weight of your trauma and symbolically release it into the river's current—a tangible, embodied marker of the internal shift.

Common Questions About the River Retreat

What is a nature-based EMDR intensive retreat?

A nature-based EMDR intensive is an extended, immersive trauma therapy experience that combines evidence-based EMDR and Structural Dissociation parts work with the grounding, regulating power of the natural world. Instead of processing trauma in a traditional office, you heal in a private riverside cabin setting designed to support deep nervous system regulation. Our River Retreat includes clinical processing, nature integration, ritual, and all-inclusive dining and lodging so you can focus entirely on your recovery.

Who is the River Retreat designed for?

The River Retreat is ideal for individuals who feel stuck in traditional weekly talk therapy, are working through complex trauma (C-PTSD) or dissociation, or feel called to heal in a way that honors their connection to the natural world. It is also well-suited for clients with limited availability who prefer to compress deep trauma work into a concentrated, distraction-free block. Readiness is assessed through a pre-retreat clinical consultation.

How does the River Retreat differ from a standard EMDR intensive?

Our standard EMDR intensives are conducted at our Mesa, Arizona office in half-day, full-day, or multi-day blocks. The River Retreat extends that model into a fully immersive, all-inclusive experience at a private cabin with direct river access. It adds nature-based EMDR interweaves (using the movement of water), a dedicated Rock Release Ritual, a personal on-site chef, and a contained retreat environment optimized for deep parts work and nervous system regulation.

Is the River Retreat covered by insurance?

No. Like our other EMDR intensives, the River Retreat is a self-pay program. Pricing starts at $3,000 for the 1.5-day baseline package, with extended multi-day retreats customized based on clinical needs. Investment includes the private cabin, personal chef, all meals and beverages, customized EMDR materials, and a curated therapeutic experience designed for your internal system. A 50% deposit is due at scheduling.

What evidence supports EMDR for trauma recovery?

EMDR is recommended by the World Health Organization, conditionally recommended by the American Psychological Association, and carries a "Strong For" recommendation in the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline (2023) for PTSD. A Kaiser Permanente-funded study found that 100% of single-trauma victims and 77% of multiple-trauma victims were no longer diagnosed with PTSD after six 50-minute sessions. The River Retreat extends these protocols into an immersive format designed to accelerate processing and integration.
